The City of Lisbon, Portugal

At the request of the City of Lisbon, Copenhagenize conducted a Desire Lines Analysis of three key intersections in the city’s primary cycling network. As was completed in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Montreal to name a few, the methodology was followed to count and map the behaviour of cyclists, and to analyze the complexity and safety of these intersections. Informed by the observations, the Copenhagenize team provided the City with design solutions to make them more intuitive, comfortable and safe for the most vulnerable. This analysis has demonstrated yet again that adapting traffic lights and re-designing physical details of the streetscape at busy intersections can significantly improve the bicycle user experience. Through this project, the City of Seven Hills reaffirms its ambition to become a cycling capital by calling upon Copenhagenize to evaluate and redesign a number of key intersections. Lisbon will continue its journey to become a cycling city by reducing space for car traffic in the city-centre and continuing to develop its cycling network.
