#15 - Tied With London
The Copenhagenize Report
According to Monocle Magazine, Helsinki is the world’s most livable city for 2011. We think that a 15th spot on the Copenhagenize Index is nothing to be ashamed of. Helsinki has a proud history of using the bicycle. Bicycle counts from the 1930's show 10,000 cyclists on certain streets. There is infrastructure in place and it is well-used and young people have hopped onto into the lifestyle saddle. There is increasing focus from city planners on improving conditions for cyclists and modernising the infrastructure.
Copenhagenize Fixes
After seeing maps with bicycle counts from the 1930s, you know what you’re capable of. A lot of your infrastructure is outdated, so modernizing your bike lane network is the primary goal for increasing modal share. Political leadership is an important factor. Prioritising the maintenance of cycle tracks in the winter would do wonders for encouraging more people to ride.
