The Copenhagenize Report
Stockholm scored down the middle on the index. Efforts are being made to calm traffic, boost cycling infrastructure, and replace car-use with bicycles. All very good. A modal share of around 10% is respectable but for the capital of Sweden - often such a visionary nation regarding environmental solutions - that is perhaps low. Neverthelss, a good bike share programme and a willingness to use the bicycle among the citizenry are important aspects.
Copenhagenize Fixes
Stockholm is lucky that Malmö doesn't qualify as a major city but hey, at least Oslo makes them look good. There is outrageous room for improvement if Stockholm wants to take the bicycle seriously as transport. There’s a need for more positive media and political involvement to counter car-centric helmet promotion. There is already a great deal of infrastructure in place but it's time to upgrade in order to increase bicycle use, particularly in the city centre.
