#4 Tokyo
#4
The Copenhagenize Report
The largest city in the world's third great bicycle nation comes in at number 4. The city's gender split is respectable and the bicycle is already an accepted form of transport. The rigorous drivers' training that motorists must go through in Japan creates a fine perception of safety on the streets. Parking solutions, outside of train stations in particular, are innovative and inspirational. Japan is so often forgotten by the "West" regarding bicycle culture, but Tokyo should be an inspiration on so many levels.

Copenhagenize Fixes
The city is no stranger to separated bicycle infrastructure but there is a need for a more comprehensive network, particularly in an area like Shibuya. While we like riding on sidewalks, we’d also like to go a bit faster sometimes. With other global cities like London, Paris and New York taking the bicycle seriously again, Tokyo should follow their lead so as not to be left behind in the race to redesign our megacities.
